If you are from the Gloucester County area you have certainly heard of Cap N Cats. Tavern and Seafood Restaurant that also offer’s a few menu items away from the sea ex: chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, wings, etc.. Seated ourselves in restaurant area that is blocked off from the bar. Very dated establishment circa 1970’s. Service was pleasant but they did seem to be a bit understaffed as they were long periods of absence from the waitress.
We started with 2 appetizers, Oysters Rockefeller and Calamari. Calamari came with red sauce for dipping, topped lightly with parmesan cheese. Large serving that fed 2, some were a bit soggy and could have been crisper. Oysters Rockefeller> topped with cheese and way too much of it as we found ourselves digging in search of the oyster, discarding the cheese. Once found large and very tasty. Bacon also added that we found to be a distraction. The vegetable puree addition offered no flavor at all. More like an attempt at a clams casino style than a traditional Oyster Rockefeller. After rooting through the appetizer we ended up with a warm oyster. The only positive, the price 6 for $7.00.
Our main courses, order of Chicken Fingers, Fried Clam Strips and a Blackened Tuna Steak (a special offering not on menu). Chicken fingers we sided with fries, both were okay nothing notable that would excite anyone. Clam strips we sided with broccoli. Large portion and another dish that we found to be serviceable in feeding us nothing more, nothing less.
Blackened Tuna Steak> siding with broccoli, this was the best of the night. Cooked as requested medium, Tuna had a fantastic overall flavor that we highly enjoyed. I say we because our staff member shared some with the others! Highly recommend that this becomes a regular menu item! Priced right under $17.00
Overall Cap N Cats was a disappointing experience as we found only one dish that we would recommend the Tuna. Dated beyond the point of quaint as the seating was uncomfortable and ambience depressing. Pricing on reasonable side with 4 iced teas and above food was only $63.00. With a long history serving the community maybe the night was just a bad one. Or, they are just relying on their past and the regulars. I doubt we would return.
