“Healthy Food for Busy People”, the mission statement of the Cracked Olive that also means fantastic food! Visiting them by invitation we had the opportunity to learn of the great cuisine offered by Chef Dennis O’Connor. O’Connor who perfected his craft in New York City and Paris focuses on the cuisine of the Mediterranean.
The press presentation started off with Chef O’Connor preparing an Heirloom Tomato Salad, featuring locally grown tomatoes. (also available to view on YouTube/CrackedOlive channel) While displaying his talent O’Connor was also a teacher, explaining the value of using locally grown and the influence salt has on the dish as well as others. Sampling when he was finished, a super simple salad that will please anyone.
The Mediterranean influence was distinct in the offerings of Tzatziki , Hummus and Babaganoush. The Tzatziki (gyro sauce), Greek Yogurt, cucumber, garlic, salt and pepper a staple of Mediterranean was a delicious dip and spread perfect for the vegetables as well as the grilled flatbread. Babaganoush was a flavorful combination of roasted eggplant, garlic and lemon juice. Full bodied would be the best way to describe this spread.
With Thanksgiving coming, Chef O’Connor gave us a sample of his version of the traditional dish. Finely marinated turkey, mashed Red Bliss Potatoes, stuffing, gravy and the star that pulled it together, the cranberry with the addition of vanilla. The presentation of our sampling of Thanksgiving was a spectacular showing of O’Connor’s skills. The Cracked Olive will be offering this Thanksgiving a complete dinner that will serve 8-12 people with all the fixings along with A’ la Carte. The last day to place an order will be November 21. Give them a call and save mother the trouble!
Completing our tasting we tried Aunt Roe’s Meatballs. The handed down recipe that O’Connor duplicated with his twist is not your average Italian meatball. Flavorful, moist and a great texture that had no taste of filler is a real winner for the traditionalist. The Spinach Pie, flakey and moist a light offering with huge flavor.
Our visit to the Cracked Olive Market was not just excellent cuisine it was also of meeting great people. O’Connor and co-owner Dan Duffy stood tall when Hurricane Sandy took its toll on the community. While spending a week without power the Cracked Olive owners took up residence in the town Fire Company kitchen. Cooking and supplying food for those who responded to the needs of the community.
The complete package, community oriented owners who provide great food. Check them out for breakfast, lunch, dinner or catering your next event, the Cracked Olive Market gets five stars for food, TEN for personality. “WE ARE IN THE PEOPLE PLEASING BUSINESS” (O’Connor) The community of Holmdel has a great neighbor. Thanks for the invite and look forward to coming back.

We selected Cracked Olive Market to cater our son’s college graduation party. Dan made the whole process easy, he was very accommodating. Anything we asked for he made it happen. His staff was polite, friendly, and efficient. They assembled everything before the party and removed the equipment after. Best of all we were able to enjoy the party. Leave the food to Cracked Olive Market they will not disappoint!
Thanks for your thoughts on the Cracked Olive. It has been some time since we were there and are happy to hear they are still putting out a great product.
