After many of recommendations from friends; along with the visuals of beautiful frying beef from Donkey’s Place on Twitter, we finally fit in a trip for lunch! Much as been written and spoke about in regard to Donkey’s Place (since 1943) and their Cheese Steak. So what were we looking for when we visited? “The Best Cheese Steak”! We all know many places in the Philadelphia area boast this statement. And being a lifelong resident of the area I have eaten my fair share of cheese steaks, and had many good ones. So here we go!
Seated myself at the bar, immediately attended to by a friendly bartender. Ordering a small cheese steak, fried onions. Super fresh round poppy seed roll that held up perfectly. No shortage of beef and fried onions as this sandwich was stacked! Supplying a fork a welcomed addition as we quickly scooped up what fell out! Wonderful seasoning on the beef which was tender and juicy. WE DID NOT use ketchup and glad we didn’t put on right away out of habit, as there was no need for that addition as the steak and onions offered HUGE flavor. We also had an order of fries that were thin cut and seasoned. These were also downed without a one left.
Okay, so “The Best Cheese Steak ” ? As joy began to be overtaken by sadness when I came to the end of lunch I asked myself this question. Pondering over for a few hours. With not another coming to mind, I will say it is the best I have ever had! If you have never been to Donkey’s Place, I recommend you do before you decide to use those words. Yeah its a challenge!
Bonus: pricing, service, and friendly!
