On a trip to the shore, we stopped at Kelly’s Cafe Restaurant in Wildwood. The restaurant/bar also has an outside seating area that offers nightly entertainment, unfortunately a little too early in the season for that tonight. We sat in a booth indoors, glad to get away from the chilly weather, yet away from the bar. We felt like having hot food to warm us up, so we ordered an appetizer of pierogies, French onion soup and a hot roast beef sandwich.
The pierogies were as described in the menu, 5 deep-fried pierogies with a side of sour cream. Our first time trying them deep-fried as opposed to pan- fried, we definitely prefer the latter better. The appetizer lacked flavor and was extremely greasy which was evident in the bottom of the serving dish. These would have been much more flavorful pan- fried with butter and onion. The offering of sour cream did help add some flavor.
The French onion soup, on the other hand, was fantastic and full of flavor. Served in a crock, the onions were cut bite-size with chunks of bread in the broth and smothered with cheese on top. We thoroughly enjoyed the soup and would have asked for another helping if we hadn’t been so full.
The hot roast beef was also wonderful and full of flavor. The fresh roll was filled with layers of sliced meat making it difficult to bite. On the side, a serving of au jus, chips and a pickle.
Kelly’s Cafe has been a long- established restaurant in the heart of Wildwood. This being the first time we’ve been here, we are certain to go back again.
