Good Food New Jersey visited Koi during what is their “Grand Opening”. Nice modern decor, we wanted to dine in but there seemed to be a lack of heat in the restaurant so we opted for take out. Ordered 2 spring rolls, S6: Double Crown and S7: Bourbon Chicken. Order took about 15 minutes to come out after ordering. Counterman was friendly.
Double Crown, General Tso’s Chicken and Shrimp with Chinese Veggies in a white sauce (similar to Shrimp with Lobster sauce). Served in the same take-out container, a bad idea as both sauces blended together. General Chicken, sauce lacked heat, getting milder and watered down as became more infiltrated by the white sauce. Shrimp (6) were large and flavorful surviving the sauce blend for the most part. Veggies, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, baby corn and water chestnuts, all steamed and very fresh.
Bourbon Chicken> Chunked Chicken meat with broccoli. Sauce very watery and on the sweet side. We didn’t really get the “bourbon” of the Bourbon Chicken. After some debate we honed in on the odd flavor of the chicken being smoked or charred. The sauce and flavor combination with the broccoli made the Bourbon Chicken something we never have had before and hope we never do again. This off the “Chef Specialty section”?
Started off with 2 disturbingly bad spring rolls. They looked beautiful, brown and crisp. Biting, juices poured out, and the flavor was terrible. Reminded me of when I bought frozen spring rolls in the supermarket.
Large menu that I am not sure where the “Fusion” part fits the restaurant but I don’t plan to go back to find out. As always, let us know when you go!
