We visited Monaghan House in South Amboy on a Facebook recommendation (SK), our fourth location on our dive bar tour. The sign out front pretty much covered what they do, “Fine Food, Drinks and Sports”. Quintessential dive bar from the pool tables to the dart board, and the surroundings, we were in dive-bar heaven. Sat at the bar and was promptly attended to, drink order taken and menu left. Good sized lunch menu we made our order based off of recommendations made, bar pizza and Pierogi’s and we ventured on our own with an order of medium wings.
Food began to come out starting with the Pierogi’s, next the wings and pizza followed. Pierogi’s a large variety from just plain to kielbasa and kraut! We went with the Mushroom that were covered in fried onions. Large order that can be shared, simply delicious, great flavor from the mushrooms which were also chopped. Fried off so they also had a nice hint of crust. The Pierogi’s will be why we would return, excellent.
Wings> we ordered medium, they came out sided with bleu cheese and celery. Thoroughly cooked and nicely presented also a good size. Sauce was more on the mild side and definitely could have used more on or more on the side to dip. Meat was moist, but overall wing’s came off dry.
Bar Pizza, a lunch special for the day, $5.95. Thin crust pizza, plenty of cheese, sauce had nice flavor. Very good pizza that came out hot and more than enough for a single person, 12 inch pizza.
Very good service throughout our visit. Pricing came out to $25 and change which included 3 draft beers. Many televisions throughout the bar, table seating and pub table seating available as well as large bar. Monaghan House, fine food, YES! Drinks, YES! and Sports, YES! The sign was accurate! A very nice “dive bar” that we recommend you visit. And awesome placements too, that give some details on New Jersey places to visit.
Brag about your favorite Dive Bar, let us know where it is and we will come stop by and review! Thank you to SK for the recommendation!
